As disciples of Christ, we share his mission to “bring glad tidings to the poor… proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord” (Lk. 4:18). As the families we work with experience challenges around immigration, safety, workers’ rights, and access to affordable housing and quality education, God moves and inspires us to help individuals and communities raise their voices. To assist these efforts:
NCADDHM and the USCCB Dept. of Justice, Peace and Human Development will co-sponsor aspecial webinaron May 16, at 2 p.m. EDT, to help Hispanic ministry and social justice diocesan staff form or strengthen relationships. The webinar will feature pairs of panelists in Hispanic ministry and social justice diocesan staff from the (arch)dioceses of Hartford, Orange, St. Cloud, and St. Petersburg, who will share examples of collaboration around formation of leaders, know-your-rights work, immigration and workers’ rights advocacy, and the process of the V National Encuentro of Hispanic/Latino Ministry. Ideally, Hispanic ministry and social justice diocesan staff will gather to participate in this webinar together, though individuals are also welcome to sign up when participating together isn’t possible. RSVP for the webinar here.
The USCCB Dept. of Justice, Peace and Human Development (JPHD) offices for Education & Outreach and the Catholic Campaign for Human Development are launching a new small grants program. In 2017, JPHD will offer up to 20 grants of $1,000 each to “kick start” new collaboration, or strengthen existing collaboration, between Hispanic ministry and social justice staff at the diocesan level. The grants are intended to support collaborative projects around the process of the V National Encuentro, know-your-rights work, leadership and formation efforts, and other important areas. You can apply for a grant here. To help spark ideas, please see this handout on Hispanic ministry-social justice diocesan collaboration (also in Spanish) from NCADDHM and JPHD.
These new opportunities can help us to become more aware of our common interests, good work that is already happening, and potential areas for new collaboration, in order to help the families and communities we serve.
