Presentation on the V Encuentro to USCCB

On November 15, 2016 Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller and Bishop Nelson Pérez presented the Fifth National Encuentro of Hispanic/Latino Ministry during the United States Conference of Catholic Bishop's fall assembly. The presentation began with an introduction using the newly released official video of the V Encuentro which was met with applause by bishop's in attendance.

Bishop Nelson then presented a brief presentation describing the goal, process and outcomes in addition to the theme, Missionary Disciples: Witnesses of God's Love. Bishop Olson of the Diocese of Fort Worth, host of the national event in 2018, formally invited Bishops to participate in this very important initiative. The Assembly then received a special and rare message from His Holiness, Pope Francis who urged Bishops to participate in this initiative and offered his Apostolic Blessing,

It is my hope that the Church in your country, at every level, will accompany the Encuentro with its own reflection and pastoral discernment. In a particular way, I ask you to consider how your local churches can best respond to the growing presence, gifts, and potential of the Hispanic community.

Bishops responded positively to the message and presentation and indicated their awareness of the current process and the participation of many leaders who are preparing at the regional and local level. Bishops also commended the efforts of the V Encuentro in focusing on younger generations, many of whom are leaving the Church for no particular affiliation. Bishop Joseph E. Strickland from the Diocese of Tyler noted,

The V Encuentro is something of the Church, not just a Hispanic thing....This is for everyone.

That morning the Conference elected the first Hispanic Vice President for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Archbishop José H. Gómez, who is expected to then move up to the highest position of President of the Conference. To watch the entire presentation on demand
